LG BD590: A Pricey Blu-ray Disc Player With a Very Large Internal Hard Drive

 

The LG BD590 contains an internal 250GB hard drive--a unique feature for a Blu-ray player and one that does much to explain the player's $300 street price (as of November 23, 2010). But how useful is an internal hard drive to a Blu-ray player?

250GB internal hard drive for multimedia playback ; Very good image quality ; Wi-Fi ; Can convert all audio formats to DTS

Expensive ; Larger and heavier than standard Blu-ray players ; Hard drive storage has limited functionality

For most people, the player's 250GB internal hard drive won't justify the LG BD590's relatively high cost.

Excellent Blu-ray image quality; rips CDs directly to built-in 250GB hard drive; Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Pandora, and CinemaNow streaming; built-in Wi-Fi; plays music, videos, and pictures off a connected USB drive or via network.

Does not support 3D Blu-ray; no quick-start mode, which makes it feel slower compared with some other players; media interface is overdesigned; must change the output mode to 1080p.

The LG BD590 deftly handles Blu-ray playback, CD ripping, and streaming media services like Netflix from a single box, but you'll have to pay for that simplicity.
