Dell OptiPlex GX270

Don't look back, IBM: Somebody might be gaining on you.

Dell's OptiPlex line isn't quite as impressive as IBM's ThinkCentre family, but it's a viable option that comes close.

Dell Optiplex GX270

The GX270 isn't cutting edge, but it's enough ahead of the game to make it a worthwhile buy for enterprise customers.

Excellent Value

If you compare this system to modern PC's of course it's no contest. If you need a basic pc that runs minimal games, email and internet, then this machine will do just fine.

Very inexpensive. Will run XP okay, but you need to remove the extra animated menus and stuff. It's a small package that you can shove most places. We had about 300 of these at one point with ZERO motherboard problems. Graphics, NIC, and HD's, but...

Comes with 512mb. That's really the minimum. You want to give XP at least a 1GB so that pages and programs can open smoothly. The system gets warm. Provide as much ventilation as possible ; A graphics card will sit right next to the PSU exhaust so...

Not worth the money...

These gotta be like 8 years old. $100 is better spent elsewhere. I bet if you looked around locally, you could find the same/similar for less than $100

Inexpensive

Old as dirt. We had a bunch of these at work. They were fine during their day as far as performance goes...except for they are known to have bad capacitors. Maybe they are refurbished with new/better caps

Watch the Motherboards

Good when they work

Dell had to extend the warranty on these originally to cover all the motherboard issues these have. The capacitors leak like crazy on these. Our company had over 1000 of these I changed the motherboard on all of them at least once even the...

What an aweful machine...

I am on the IT Staff Member for a local School District and we have a lot of these around. We have to service them on a regular basis and they are plagued with defects. I highly suggest just steering clear of these. There is no value in these stinkers....

After years of abuse, they still work. But that's not saying much

These things are dead-slow. They also require maintenance on a regular basis. To make matters worse, they are plagued with bad motherboard issues. Dell had a recall for motherboard, but the recall window closed in 2008

Old, so very old

Please ignore dell lovers review, it appears to be an automated review. This machine is NOT cutting edge, it wasn't 10 years ago either

It has a small form factor

I had a customer using these systems. They started as Windows 98 systems and tried very hard to run XP. Extremely limited memory upgrades and you need special memory. The optical drive is a laptop style drive, so if you need more than what it offers...

Save Yourself!

The most important part is that the hardware is unreliable. I work with a company that has over 50 of these recertified computers along with many other models of computers and the GX270's give us the most problems, with about 2 failing every week. The...

Cheap, replaceable, simple to rebuild/replace components

They break more often then not. There are times when you will plug in a GX270 and have it work for a day, then turn it on the next day and have a hardware failure. The hardware is extremely unreliable. They are also extremely slow. We have 3.0Ghz 2GB...

50% failure rate

Price

We bought 8 of these. Four died because of the bad capacitor issue ; These are the only bad Dell computers I've seen

Small form factor causes serious overheating

As soon as I got mine, I stood the case up on end, opened it up about 3", and set a small desk fan to blow into it all the time. It was the only way I could keep my computer from cooking itself. Using this method, I was able to use my GX270 for...

None. Really. None. For $120 you're better off getting a refurb laptop -- same overall power with lots more reliability and an even more impressive "small" form factor. ;)

The "small" form factor design was a Dell disaster. The P4 chip draws way too much power for a case that has NO airflow, and caused both the power supply and the motherboard to be in a constant state of overheating ; On-board GPU is slow and buggy and...
