Asus VivoBook x202 review: a netbook with a touchscreen

This VivoBook occupies the no-man's land between laptop and tablet. It looks like Asus is bringing the netbook back.

Compact size (but not an Ultrabook) ; Good speakers & sturdy build

Sub-par display brightness ; Battery life on the low side

The Asus X202E adds a touch screen to Windows 8 for less

It's great to see more touch-screen Windows 8 laptops under $600, but that requires compromises in performance and battery life.

The ; is very inexpensive for a touch-screen Windows 8 laptop, and looks and feels like a more high-end system.

The CPU trades down to a slower model, battery life is unimpressive, and the large touch pad is flaky.

It's great to see more touch-screen Windows 8 laptops under $600, but note that the Asus X202E requires some compromises in performance and battery life.

Asus VivoBook X202E-DH31T

The Asus VivoBook X202E-DH31T budget ultraportable is an affordable alternative to touch ultrabooks, but takes some hits in performance and battery life.

Slim and light with aluminum construction. Windows 8 with touch screen. Low price.

Mediocre performance. Short battery life.

Asus VivoBook X202E-DH31T Review and Ratings

It's not without trade-offs, but this under-three-pound laptop looks like an ultrabook and sports a responsive touch screen. At around $500, it's one of the best budget Windows 8 machines we've seen so far.

Very low price for a touch-screen Windows 8 laptop ; Thin and light ; Responsive touch screen

Performance and battery life don’t match up with pricier ultrabooks ; No flash-memory cache to accelerate program launches ; Some screen viewing-angle issues

The VivoBook X202E certainly isn't without shortcomings. Those who frequently task their laptops with CPU-taxing workloads like video editing and bulk crunching of high-resolution still images should look for a system with a more powerful Core i5 or i7...

"Won't stop breaking"

I purchased my X202E in March 2013. Within six months, the keypad caved in. After a year, the entire keyboard ceased to function. Two years later, the hard drive died. The functions on the pad worked intermittently from day one, as was the case with...

Looks, weight, materials

Shoddy hardware, clumsy touch screen

If you need an ultraportable laptop that can take a minor beating in a padded bag and packs much more power than other 11"-12" class laptops, this laptop is a fantastic deal and a very solid buy. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you plan to (A) budget in a 7mm...

Lightweight aluminum construction, USB 3.0, rubberized bottom plate, thin without sacrificing critical I/O ports, plenty of RAM, SATA-III support, and a very good ULV CPU make this laptop hard to turn down. Battery life for the internal battery's size...

This laptop has a poorly engineered heatsink from the factory. It is a copper plate with a tiny fan; no heatpipes or fins at all. The CPU die is designed to handle up to 90C temperatures but enters thermal throttling in the mid-80s, and the poor...

Past Review is no good

The 11.6 inch screen is great for portability. Though the 4gb memory is fairly small the SSD makes up for it ; After tinkering with Windows 8 and the laptop configuration I managed to get the touch to work after restarting and searching for driver...

The only downfall is the 4GB memory, though that can be fixed by buying an external hard drive ; The computer seems flimsy so buying a screen protector for both sides as well as a carrying case will probably be a good buy along with it
