Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550: second verse, same as the first (review)

Google's strange Chrome OS experiment continues with the Samsung Series 5 550. Better hardware and a better OS still don't make this concept car of a laptop any easier to recommend.

The 2012 ; has more RAM, an improved Chrome OS, and a faster processor than the previous version.

A relatively high price, the need to always be online, and the general limitations of the Chrome OS make it tough to recommend this Chromebook over a less expensive laptop or tablet.

Despite solid hardware and a slightly improved Chrome OS, the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550 comes with far too many caveats and compromises compared with similarly priced but more-capable tablets and laptops.

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook 550 (XE550C22-H01)

The new Samsung Series 5 Chromebook 550 (XE550C22-H01) laptop is speedy when connected to the Internet.

Quick bootup into Chrome. Full rich Website support, including Flash. Chrome Extensions and setting carry over from PC-based browsing. 100MB 3G free a month for two years. Verizon 3G. Less Malware to worry about. Ethernet port.

Locked into Google account. Google Docs/Drive isn?t Office. Useless without Internet connection. HDMI/DVI/VGA requires an adapter.

Review: Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook

With Samsung's newly redesigned Series 5 Chromebook, it feels like Chrome OS has finally arrived.

Updated design with a complete (and much needed) redo on the trackpad. Excellent video performance, smooth scrolling and snappy input. Six hours of battery. Login screen great for multi-user environments, and all your bookmarks and history can be...

No big disks, no keyboard backlight, no DVD drive, no Bluetooth, no other traditional laptoppy stuff. Speakers stink. Screen is dim and lacks sharpness. Could be lighter. The whole “Just the web?” thing doesn’t fly for everyone

Review Samsung 550C22-H01US Chromebook

Reliable office worker. Chrome OS is still young with a very limited scope, but it already excels in everything it has been designed to do. Is this second-generation Chromebook from Samsung worth a look to on-the-go business and office users?

Bright matte display, Large touchpad, Long battery life, Secure and reliable, Almost instantaneous performance, Easy to use and learn, Strong wireless capabilities, Almost noiseless, DisplayPort and USIM options, The Chromebook has a narrow and limited...

Limited in flexibility and scope, Essentially useless without an available Internet connection, Not easily end-user upgradeable, no USB 3.0/HDMI/eSATA/sleep-and-charge, Fragile AC connector, A backlit keyboard would go a long way in adding additional...

Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook review

The latest Samsung Chrome OS laptop, the Series 5 500, seriously ups its game when it comes to the hardware specification, with the Atom processor of its predecessor replaced by a dual core 1.3GHz Celeron 867 and its 2GB of memory upgraded to 4GB. The...

More powerful hardware and a new edition of Chrome OS that lets you work offline make this the best Chromebook yet

Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook review

A year ago, we saw the first Samsung Chromebook and we were left feeling pretty underwhelmed with it. Not only was the hardware clunky and slow, but Google's much-anticipated Chrome OS was far more basic and limited in what it could do that we were...

We’re using the cloud more and more, but Google is too far ahead of the curve with Chrome OS.The updates have made it more usable, but what you can do offline is still too limited, and the file manager desperately needs improving. We could moan that it...

Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook review

The Samsung Series 5 550 is the follow up to the company's original Series 5 Chromebook, offering a faster processor, increased RAM and slightly sturdier outer casing.

Reasonable keyboard and trackpad, Chrome OS works well when connected to the internet

Reliance on internet is a pain, external case scratches easily, incredibly overpriced, feels heavy

The Chromebook's reliance on an active internet connection and unreasonable price tag make it ill-suited for business use.

Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook

Google's Chrome OS, now more than a year old, is perfect for those who live in the cloud and always have an Internet connection. Chrome 19 takes a few things offline (basic photo viewing and editing, document viewing), but most everything is done...

Very portable, strong improvements over last gen Chromebooks software and hardware, fast OS

Lose your Internet connection and the Chromebook becomes much less useful. Mediocre hardware for the price

Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook

The Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook is unlike any other laptop: it runs Google Chrome OS, which is almost all web browser. This barebones approach combined with a fast 16GB solid state drive, 4GB of memory and 1.3GHz Intel Celeron processor makes start...

While there’s a lot to like about Chrome OS’ simplicity, the Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook is still a tad too limited for most casual users day to day. The inability to install applications you’d take for granted on Windows or Mac will send many up...
