TomTom XL 350-TM Showcases a Simpler GPS Interface

The TomTom XL 350-TM ($170, price as of 1/5/2011) should appeal to both existing fans of TomTom navigators and newcomers alike. Like other models in the XL 350 series, this unit boasts a 4.3-inch touchscreen.

Sensible routes from TomTom's IQ Routes ; Generous database of 7 million POIs ; Live traffic receiver integrated into power cable on traffic-enabled models

No Bluetooth ; Missing some features found on the XL340 series

The XL 350-TM provides TomTom's usual impressive navigation features, with an industry standard 4.3-inch screen. Included lifetime traffic and lifetime map updates make this one of the most feature-packed GPS devices available for the price.

TomTom XL 350 review: TomTom XL 350

It may look like the same old TomTom XL from last year, but with a new version of TomTom's software and new models that offer lifetime traffic, lifetime map updates, or both, the TomTom XL 350 and XXL 550 series of navigators merit a second look.

TomTom's interface has undergone a massive overhaul with this new series, resulting in a menu structure that's much easier to navigate. Trip routing happened quickly, and turn-by-turn directions were clear and concise. TomTom's EasyPort mount keeps the...

Traffic service requires power cable to be plugged in. Some menu options are oddly labeled. Lifetime traffic model occasionally overlays ads on the map screen.

The TomTom XL 350 and XXL 550 series of GPS devices represent a marked improvement over the previous generation, keeping its great form factor while streamlining its software.

TomTom XL 350-T ( Lifetime Traffic Edition)

Design The XL series' design hasn't changed at all since we reviewed the XL 340 S last year. Users interact with the unit via a 4.3-inch WQVGA wide-format touch screen (5 inches for the XXL models) or the power button on the top edge, the XL's only...

TomTom XL 350 TM: Free Map Updates and Traffic Service

Free product lifetime map updates (a $60 per year value)., Free product lifetime traffic detection and avoidance service.

You'll need to move up to the TomTom "Go" series for hands-free calling capability via Bluetooth.

The TomTom XL 350 TM is at the top of the XL 350 series that TomTom has inserted into the heart of its dedicated car GPS lineup. Above it are the large-screen (5-inch diagonal) XXL models and the premium "Go" and "Live" models with features such as...

"Doesn't have true pedestrian mode"

The menu system allows you to select a pedestrian or bicycle mode so that the unit realizes you are not in a car and can tell you to abruptly stop and turn around without concern for other cars and you can also go down the wrong way on one way streets....

Large bright screen

Since you cannot enter GPS coordinates, it really doesn't have true pedestrian mode.

"Absolute worst customer service on the planet. Period!"

The product quality is poor, but TomTom's customer service is the very worst anywhere. These are clearly con artists disguised as a corporation. We purchased one of these units in December 2010. The screen failed at the end of January 2011 - just out...

Some of the screen features are very good. The "red light camera" warning feature that can be downloaded for free is very helpful - especially in our area where the local government is red light camera happy. Lane change images are good.

Product quality is poor (our first one failed just two weeks out of warranty). But when our second unit had an issue and TomTom's customer service refused to help, I realized that this is one of the least customer friendly companies on the planet.

Less features then the ONE

Horrible software for the PC - it will NOT work if you have more then one TomTom device with the same email address used for registration; pretty much wants a dedicated computer for each TomTom, and it keeps on trying to sell you stuff. You can change...

Lifetime maps and traffic updates; suction cup now stays on (not like the one shipped with TomTom One which was a joke). I like that I have both my speed and legal speeds displayed and the color changes when you are 4 MPH over. Just works, uses the...

No more compass displayed; POIs difficult to use (try finding a hospital by name, Resurection in Chicagoland for example - you get 30+ facilities with the same name, but no street address or phone is listed, just the distance from your current location...

Fantastic GPS

This GPS boots up fast and the graphics transition smoothly. The features are useful and easy to navigate. The lifetime maps are a huge selling point. I bought this for my son and I'll probably buy another one for myself. It's significantly superior to...
